I always find the Thais a rather impressive group of people in Southeast Asia. Good soccer players (Kiatisuk, Surachai), good swimmers (Ratapong), good fighters (muay thai and Tony Jaa), not to mention the many encounters my colleagues and me had with stoic Thai workers who seem to have no pain sense.
My current posting is like an ASEAN congress, we have NTS MOs from Philipines, Thailand, fellow MOPEX from Malaysia.. Once again the Thais impressed me ++
I always feel so relieved i had finished the MBBS (something i thought as tortuous). Little did i know that for the Thais, the end of their exams is the beginning of their nightmare. They have to drawlots for their postings and people are known to faint if they drew the Southern provinces (you never know when you will be the next bomb victim). How to save lives? Can't even guarantee one will live the next day there..
But also don't expect too much if you draw another province, you will have to work 7 days a week (oh did i mention they are already working 7 day weeks since year 4 med school) from 6am to 9pm. morning round involves 6 wards of 300 patients. (i.e. 1 MO to 300 patients) Yup 300, the ED i'm working in now sees 400-500 a day (that's about 30 doctors seeing 400-500). So everyday is just seeing patients, doing changes from patient 1 to 300...
But of course not everyday is so sunny: just round and changes, patients collapse... So as a MO, one must resuscitate as well.. (not to mention they have no HO year), so a first day MO gotta resuscitate without the registrar and consultant. And that's not because the seniors are sleeping, it's because they are busy doing other stuff like operations or clerking, seeing, resuscitating other patients... My Thai colleague told me she actually had to flip a book right in front of anxious family members during a resus!!
I can't imagine myself working there... I'm already counting down to day offs everytime i start work.. How to survive 7 day work week for my whole life?? Singaporeans are pampered, true even for Singaporean doctors..
